COVID-19 Update: We're back!

Starting on June 30th, the Essex County Surrogate's Office is open to the public. All visitors must enter through the Veterans Courthouse where they will be subject to mandatory temperature checks. All visitors must use hand sanitizer at designated locations. Visitors must also wear a mask at all times and maintain social distance requirements while in the building.

The Essex County Surrogate’s Court Responsibilities

The Essex County Surrogate’s Court responsibilities include validating Wills, appointing administrators for those who die without Wills, and reviewing and assisting with the documentation surrounding adoption and adult guardianship. The Court also schedules adoption hearings as well as Superior Court Probate Part case hearings. The Surrogate’s Court holds public records that date back to the 1700s.
