Surrogate’s Intermingled Trust Funds
In New Jersey, if a minor—a person under 18—inherits money or receives funds as a result of a lawsuit, those funds are generally placed in a trust fund managed by the Surrogate’s Court until the minor reaches the age of majority—over 18 years old.
A guardian of the person and property must be appointed by the Superior Court or Surrogate’s Court to open a minor’s account with Surrogate’s Court.
